Naturopathic Medicine

Dr. MJ Atkins is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor and has been in practice for over 15 years in Victoria, BC. Dr. Atkins believes strongly in identifying and treating the root cause of an issue and not just focusing on the treatment of symptoms. He emphasizes an evidence based approach to patient care and has a special interest in supporting his patients’ recovery process through pain and injury utilizing regenerative injection therapies including platelet-rich plasma (PRP), prolotherapy, hyaluronic acid, and cortisone. Dr. Atkins uses ultrasound-guidance for orthopedic injections to help ensure safety, accuracy, and efficacy.

Dr. Atkins lives on the Peninsula with his family and is an adoptive father. He is an avid nature-lover who enjoys all that the Peninsula has to offer whether paddle boarding, playing hockey, gardening, or hiking with his dogs. Ian Hallworth holds a Physical Therapy degree from the University of Alberta as well as a Master’s degree in Rehabilitation Science with a special interest in knees. He also holds two additional U of A degrees in Education and Physical Education, along with several national certifications in Athletic Therapy, Sports Physical Therapy, as well as graduate courses in Sport Performance and Exercise Physiology. Ian has explored his passion for physical education, teaching, sports, and rehabilitation throughout his career and has been involved in organizing and delivering physical therapy services for many provincial, national, and international events from college to professional-level sports including 10 years as Head Therapist for the CFL’s Edmonton Football Club and physical therapy consultant to the NHL’s Edmonton Oilers Hockey Club. Ian embraces life-long learning, incorporating an evidence-based practice and patient education with advanced training in soft tissue and myofascial release, joint mobilization, taping techniques, exercise to optimize patient care and ims dry needling. Paul graduated from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Therapy in 1998. He has gone on to specialize in orthopaedics completing a Certificate of Intermediate Manual and Manipulative Physiotherapy in 2000, a Diploma of Advanced Manual and Manipulative Physiotherapy in 2001 and a Certificate of Gunn IMS, Intramuscular Stimulation (CGIMS) in 2008. Paul McIntyre opened Broadmead Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Clinic in 2002. Their philosophy is “A Body in Motion Stays in Motion”. To keep your body in motion he focuses on quality patient care with an emphasis on manual and manipulative therapy, Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) in conjunction with exercise and education. Paul has special interests in spinal and shoulder dysfunction as well as sports injuries. Matt Rose is a graduate of Texas A&M, with an undergraduate degree in Exercise Physiology and his Masters in Physical Therapy from the University of Alberta. He is also certified by the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute and in Functional Dry Needling / IMS. Matt has a strong background in sports therapy with key interests in swimming and running injuries. In his athletic career, he was a 2004 Olympian in swimming, 11 time National Champion, former national record holder and represented Canada for 10 years at international swim meets. Blending his knowledge of sport and physio, Matt is now the traveling physio with the National Swim Team (most recently at the 2015 Pan Am Games and 2016 Rio Olympics) and works locally with the High Performance Swimming Center and various swim clubs in Victoria where he supports youth, amateur and Olympic athletes achieve their goals. Despite this niche he enjoys treating athletes of all types from old-timer hockey players to high school baseball players. He takes a dynamic approach to rehabilitation encompassing manual techniques, soft tissue release, Functional Dryneedling / IMS and exercise prescription. He believes that helping the client to understand their specific condition is a key component of rehabilitation which empowers the client for optimal return to function.

Mary graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Therapy in 2001. Prior to that, she completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacology in 1996. She worked in Calgary for several years before embarking on a sabbatical that included a working stint in New Zealand. On her return to Canada, Mary moved to Red Deer, Alberta, where she enjoyed a wonderful practice for many years. Mary and her family were recently lured by the beauty of the west coast, and are now excited to call Victoria home.

Mary is certified in both Gunn Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) and Acupuncture. She has also taken numerous post graduate courses that include K-taping, neuro-mobilization, therapeutic exercise, breathing mechanics, running injuries, whiplash, pelvic floor, and core training. Combining her love of needling and manual therapy in her treatments, she provides comprehensive quality client care. She is a firm believer that providing thorough client education is an essential part of their rehabilitation journey. Mary enjoys having a broad orthopaedic caseload and is happy to treat people who have sports injuries, tendonitis, headaches, aches and pains, and everything in between. Mary is passionate about fitness and wellbeing, and she tries to empower her clients to take an active role in their rehabilitation so they can get back to doing the things they wish to do. Outside of work, Mary loves adventure and travel. She also dabbles in all things active, such as mountain biking, hiking, running, skiing, yoga, and paddle boarding.
